This page looks at:

  1. The opt-in email news service (Education Management News),
  2. Broadcasting emails to generic school addresses.

1: Education Management News

Education Management News is a unique opt-in email news service run by Hamilton House that goes to head teachers, deputy head teachers, and other managers in primary and secondary schools.  For more information on the lists and also the latest research on email marketing to schools please click here

2: Generic Email addresses

Such addresses consist of info@myschool.co.uk and admin@thisschool.co.uk and so on.  In other words they go to the administrator.

I have heard it argued that there is nothing wrong with that at all - after all, isn't that exactly what shared mailings through direct mail do?

The answer is yes, of course it is - but the issue is, what happens next?  In terms of the direct mail piece the administrator just picks it up and puts it in the teacher's pigeon hole.  But what of the email?   Most teachers in schools don't have their own email (indeed around half of the subscribers to Ed Management News subscribe from a home address).

And if the administrator does pass the mail on, what then?  The chances are that the mail will start to be corrupted.  If the images and logo have survived the journey to the school, they probably won't survive the journey to the colleague.  If you disbelieve this, try it.  Send an email through a commercial email broadcast program.  Then forward it to another person, and see what happens.

If there is no email address what happens is that the administrator has to decide if he/she wants to print this out and then pass it on.  You are asking this administrator to do two things here - print and then put the print out in the pigeon hole.  And again there are format issues.  Have you used colour?  Does the administrator have a colour printer?   If you have never checked, try it.

For all these reasons, response rates are poorer than with mailings via Education Management News, but it is still possible to make a profit using such lists.

The prices including broadcasting are:

5000 secondary schools: £250
5000 selected primary schools: £250
10,000 selected primary schools: £500
All 24,000 primary schools: £800

Plus £10 set up charge for the complete job.

If you wish to purchase the list for use yourself, the price is
4p per address for once only use
12p for a one year licence using the list a maximum of 12 times
18p for eternal re-use using the list a maximum of 12 times per year
